Who we are

Green Building Council Nigeria (GBCN) is a non-profit membership organization driving the transformation of Nigeria’s built environment through sustainable construction and climate-smart urbanism. As an Emerging Member of the World Green Building Council and a national member of GlobalABC, we connect professionals, institutions, and communities to training, advocacy, and practical tools that support greener, healthier, and more resilient cities. Since our revitalization in 2021, GBCN has expanded its reach, deepened partnerships, and continues to lead initiatives like the Future Cities Summit and the development of DGNB Nigeria and the Built Environment Carbon Database.

EcoNaija Hub

EcoNaija Hub is the upcoming premier online directory and resource hub for green building products and services in Nigeria, developed by Green Building Council Nigeria (GBCN).

Nigerian Built Environment Carbon Database.

The Nigeria Built Environment Carbon Database (NBECD) will provide the first-ever local dataset on the carbon footprint of buildings, materials, and construction processes in Nigeria.

Our Objectives

GBCN aims to provide safer and pollution-free environments, promoting healthier living spaces, and to foster
sustainable urban transformation through engagement and partnerships with all green building stakeholders,
aiming to increase Nigeria’s stock of resource-efficient and climate-resilient buildings and communities by;

Public Awareness

Increase awareness among the public, especially real estate and construction professionals, about sustainable urban and rural environments to support Carbon Neutrality and Climate Resilience by fostering broader understanding and acceptance of sustainable practices.

Professional Engagement

Engage professionals in adopting practices that design, construct, and operate sustainable, safe, and affordable environments, directly contributing to Achieving Carbon Neutrality, Promoting Resource Circularity, and Enhancing Climate Resilience across all projects.

Training and Education

Provide comprehensive training and educational programs on green building technologies and practices to enhance Resource Circularity and support Carbon Neutrality, building capacity and spreading knowledge on sustainable construction techniques.

Research and Development

Conduct research and develop new sustainable materials and technologies that underpin the principles of green building, advancing Climate Resilience and Resource Circularity through innovative solutions that adapt to and mitigate the effects of climate change.

Collaboration and Partnerships

Form strategic partnerships with local and international organizations to advance sustainable building practices, enhancing Global Integration and Climate Resilience by bringing global insights and practices to local applications.

Advocacy and Engagement

Advocate for and engage with the construction and real estate sectors, governments, and communities to incorporate sustainable building policies and practices, essential for Achieving Carbon Neutrality and fostering sustainable urban planning.

Evaluation and Rating

Develop and apply evaluation indices and green building ratings to assess and encourage sustainable building developments, promoting Resource Circularity and Carbon Neutrality by setting standards and benchmarks that drive sustainability in construction.

Global Integration

Integrate Nigeria into the global discourse on sustainable construction by actively participating in international networks and forums, ensuring Nigerian practices are aligned with global standards and innovations to foster Resource Circularity and Climate Resilience.
