More about us

Our Story

Green Building Council Nigeria (GBCN) was born out of a shared vision to transform Nigeria’s built environment through sustainable construction and green building practices. This journey began in 2010, inspired by the UN-Habitat’s Conference on Promoting Green Building Rating in Africa held in Nairobi. Following the event, a group of forward-thinking Nigerian built environment professionals established GBCN, securing Prospective Membership of the World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) that same year.

While these early efforts laid a strong foundation, the organization encountered significant structural and operational headwinds that hindered its progress. Despite the dedication of the founding group, these limitations led to a period of dormancy and the eventual lapse of its WorldGBC membership in 2016.

A new chapter began in July 2021, when concerned stakeholders came together with renewed commitment to revitalize the Council. Through a participatory process, a Revitalization Action Plan (RAP) was developed and adopted at an Emergency General Meeting in October 2021. This led to a restructured governance framework, the appointment of a new board, and re-engagement with the WorldGBC.

Since then, GBCN has experienced remarkable growth and transformation. Membership has quadrupled since 2022, with active engagement from professionals across disciplines and regions. Certification activity has also increased, while new context-based tools such as DGNB Nigeria and the Nigeria Built Environment Carbon Database are being developed to support measurable, locally relevant change.

As we grow, so does our impact. Our national and international partnerships continue to deepen, and our collaborative efforts are helping to reshape Nigeria’s green building landscape. GBCN is proud to be a member of the WorldGBC’s Africa Regional Network and a recognized Emerging Member of WorldGBC, as well as an active participant in the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC).

We invite you to join us in shaping a greener, healthier, and more inclusive urban future – for Nigeria and for Africa.
