Nigeria is building fast—but are we building smart?
Nigeria Built Environment Carbon Database
Our buildings and infrastructure account for a huge share of emissions, yet we lack the data to reduce their carbon footprint.
That’s about to change.
The Nigeria Built Environment Carbon Database (NBECD) will provide the first-ever local dataset on the carbon footprint of buildings, materials, and construction processes in Nigeria.
This tool will empower developers, designers, policymakers, and investors to make informed decisions and build low-carbon, resilient buildings for Nigeria’s future.

Why This Matters
Nigeria is growing fast
400+ million people by 2050 → ~40 million more homes needed.
Massive demand for cement, steel, and materials – all driving emissions.
But... there’s a problem
We don’t know the carbon impact of materials and construction in Nigeria.
Imported data from other countries isn’t accurate – Our production, transport, and energy systems are different.
The result?
Builders, policymakers, and investors are working blind when it comes to carbon. The Carbon Database will change that.

What the Database Will Provide
The database will provide data on the Carbon Impact of
Building Materials
Cement, steel, bricks, timber, and more.
Construction Processes
Transport, site operations, ETC.
Building Operations
Energy use in homes, offices, and factories.
Our Objectives
GBCN aims to provide safer and pollution-free environments, promoting healthier living spaces, and to foster
sustainable urban transformation through engagement and partnerships with all green building stakeholders,
aiming to increase Nigeria’s stock of resource-efficient and climate-resilient buildings and communities, by
Architects & Builders
Choose low-carbon materials.
Developers
Build green and reduce costs.
Policymakers
Create better regulations and incentives.
Manufacturers
Green supply chains and lower emissions.
Investors & Insurers
Assess climate risks.
Researchers
Access robust, local data.
Our Vision
- Led by GBCN, with input from industry experts and partners.
- First phase will focus on building materials from key Nigerian regions.
- Phased development to expand coverage over time.

FAQ
Frequently
ASKED
QUESTIONS
What is the Nigeria Built Environment Carbon Database?
The Carbon Database will be a national digital platform providing local data on the carbon impact of building materials, construction processes, and building performance in Nigeria.
It will support architects, developers, policymakers, and manufacturers in making low-carbon choices for buildings and infrastructure.
Why is this database needed?
Nigeria is rapidly urbanizing, and the built environment is a major source of emissions.
However, local carbon data is largely unavailable.
The database will fill this gap, enabling evidence-based decisions that reduce emissions and support sustainable construction.
When will the database be launched?
We are currently in the concept and partnership-building phase.
Data collection and development will follow, but there is no confirmed launch date yet.
Sign up to stay informed.
How will the database work?
The platform will allow users to:
- Access carbon data on materials, construction, and building operations.
- Search and compare data based on location, material type, and performance.
- Support green certification processes (e.g., EDGE, DGNB).
Detailed functionality will be shared closer to launch.
Who can use the database?
It is being designed for:
- Architects, Developers, and Builders – to select low-carbon materials and construction methods.
- Manufacturers – to showcase verified low-carbon products.
- Policymakers – to support green building regulations.
- Researchers – to analyze data on Nigeria’s built environment emissions.
How can I get involved?
We welcome partners, funders, and data contributors:
- Fund the Project: Support the development of this critical national resource.
- Contribute Data: Building professionals, manufacturers, and researchers can help populate the database.
- Collaborate: Join GBCN and be part of Nigeria’s green building transformation.

Will there be a fee to access the database?
Access details are still being developed, but the database will aim to be widely accessible, with potential tiers for general access and more advanced data for partners or members.
